Australian Marine Complex - Precincts

Five Cohesive Precincts

The AMC is home to leading commercial shipbuilders and is uniquely positioned close to major industrial parks, with businesses benefiting from a highly skilled workforce and world class infrastructure.

The complex extends over 5 precincts;

Shipbuilding

The Shipbuilding Precinct is an integral part of Western Australia’s shipbuilding, repair and maintenance industry as well as a support to offshore construction.

It is approximately 35 hectares in area extending north of the Common User Facility to the Recreational Boating Facility.

The Shipbuilding Precinct is home to leading commercial shipbuilders and defence industry prime contractors who support the construction and maintenance of new naval and commercial vessels. The precinct boasts experts in the construction of high speed, lightweight vessels, luxury superyachts, tugs, rescue, patrol, fishing, paramilitary and offshore supply vessels for local and export markets.

Marine Support Facility

The Marine Support Facility is located within the Shipbuilding Precinct. It is owned and operated by BAE Systems and has significant capacity for vessel repair and refit.

Equipped with extensive dry-berth support infrastructure, including one of Australia's largest ship-lifts with a lifting capacity of 8,065 tonnes, the Marine Support Facility is used extensively by the Royal Australian Navy.

The Marine Support Facility ship-lift can lift the majority of Australian Navy combat vessels and has been used to dry-dock the Royal Australian Navy's guided missile frigates, ANZAC class frigates and the Collins-class submarines, which are stationed at the nearby HMAS Stirling's Fleet Base West on Garden Island. The ship-lift is also employed for a wide range of commercial vessels and can accommodate ships up to 140 metres in length with 23 metre beams.

Fabrication

Similar to the Shipbuilding precinct, the Fabrication precinct is located on the harbour and includes world-renown shipbuilders. This precinct also contains the 40 hectare Common User Facility.

Consequently, it delivers exciting value-add opportunities for Western Australia's significant marine and resource sectors. Specifically, it provides world-class, multi-purpose facilities for the fabrication, assembly and load-out of pre-assembled units up to 15,000 tonnes, creating an impressive range of global engineering and manufacturing options for local, national and global projects.

Key features include:

  • Deep, fully protected harbour
  • Freehold and leasehold industrial sites
  • Extensive common user facilities on waterfront
  • Heavy / wide load road access

Support

Occupying 38 hectares within the AMC, the Support Industry Precinct provides serviced land for small to medium-sized suppliers of goods and services to the shipbuilding, defence, energy and resource industries.

The close proximity of the Support Industry Precinct to the Shipbuilding and Fabrication Precinct, WA Applied Engineering and Shipbuilding Training Centre; and Common User Facility provides real opportunities and synergies for companies keen to locate close to major customers.

The Support Industry Precinct is also close to Perth's other heavy industrial zones, with high-wide load roads providing ease of access.

Technology

The Technology Precinct is a leading location for driving innovative research, education and technology development for the defence, marine, energy, and resource sectors in Australia.

Through co-location, the Technology Precinct enables small to medium enterprises, research, and support organisations to collaborate and create new solutions for industry.

The Technology Precinct is also home to the Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training (ACEPT). Part of the South Metropolitan TAFE network, the Centre is the leading provider of process operations training for the Australian oil and gas, mineral and chemical processing industries. It was founded in collaboration with industry, and is guided by a 25-member Industry Board comprising representatives from major operating and service companies. The Centre offers certificates under the Australian Qualifications Framework and short courses designed to meet industry and individual client needs. ACEPT can also tailor courses specific to the individual needs of companies and workplaces.
