WA’s submarine capabilities going from strength to strength

2 April 2012

Minister for Commerce Simon O’Brien recently visited the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) based facility of ASC, official contractor for the ongoing repair, maintenance and design upgrades of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Collins Class submarines.

The Minister viewed the work being undertaken by the company on the submarines, HMAS Waller and HMAS Dechaineux.

Minister O’Brien said the work underway on HMAS Waller was the most complex and comprehensive maintenance upgrade undertaken at the ASC facility to date.

“In the last 12 months ASC has let 68 contracts worth $13.5 million to Western Australian companies and undertaken $80 million worth of work at its own facility,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This is an outstanding achievement for both the company and the Western Australian economy. I must also mention that this work would not have been fulfilled without the assistance of the AMC floating dock.”

Minister O’Brien said there was significant maritime defence capability at the AMC and the Western Australian Government was supportive of the industry sector.

“The defence capability in the State is supported by the Government through investment in common use infrastructure such as the AMC floating dock and wharves used by ASC,” he said.

“The State has had a long involvement with ASC and was critical to the company’s decision to locate its facility at the AMC to service submarines based at HMAS Striling.

“I am very interested in the current Coles Review which is looking at the sustainment of the Collins Class submarine. It was pleasing to see the very complimentary comments about ASC's Western Australian operations in the Phase 1 Report of the review.

“I was also particularly interested in the comment about "concentrating all sustainment activity in WA would be likely to have clear benefits". It has long been the position of the WA Government that all sustainment activity should occur where the submarines are based. The State awaits with interest the final report of the Coles Review.”
